Early settler Thomas Wilkinson is generally accepted as giving the area its name because of his association with Notting Hill, London. he was a carrier between Oakleigh & Ferntree gully who opened a refreshment (grocery and bakery) stop at Notting Hill, 4km’s from Oakleigh which became the half way house hotel in 1870. In 1891 the business was re-named the Notting Hill Hotel and the present red brick building of 19 rooms was completed.
